Why You Should Protect Your Children From Sexting

Sexting is becoming a serious nuisance in society today. It involves someone sending another person x-rated messages, photos or videos via their cell phone. This type of communication is not new and many adults are guilty of this type of action. However, the problem stems from the fact that many children and teenagers are becoming involved in this activity also. Therefore as a parent you may have to deal with issues which you should not have to with your young teen or child.

Let's face it exposing an impressionable child to this type of material often triggers curiosity. As parents we know that curiosity is the first step to action. In the young adult's mind if it seems cool with friends and everyone is doing it then it is okay participate in it also. It may not be having sex but your child may start to do other things such as take naked photos of them self and forward to friends or maybe someone they like. There are various scenarios which can occur and your young one may end up paying the price for it. The worst case scenario which many people may not be aware of is that you can be arrested for sexting.

How can you be arrested for sexting?

It is quite easy to cross that legal line with sexting especially when dealing with minors. For example, let's say your 17 year old son was given a nude picture of his underage girlfriend. If later on he sends this same photo to someone else he could be arrested and charged. This is because it is considered child pornography if nude photos of a minor are being circulated. He will not only be charged but will be labeled as a sex offender. This means for the rest of his life he will be flagged in society and his options will be restricted. This goes for anyone who circulates this type of material whether male or female. This is how dangerous sexting can be and as a parent you need to be mindful and alert to nip this problem in the butt.

How to prevent sexting?

If you really want to put an end to sexting in your home then you would have to take away your child's cell phone. This may not be practical, therefore your other option will be to monitor their text and bbm communications and then act accordingly. This is more a reactive approach however it may be your only option if you are not willing to take possession of the teen's cell phone. Using a text message or bbm spy also have the advantage that you will be able to do other things such as track the child's whereabouts etc. Therefore you will not only be protecting them against sexting but other ills of society as well. This is as much as we parent can do without being too intrusive in our offspring's lives.
