Barnes & Noble unit to operate Hawaii Pacific University bookstores

A subsidiary of Barnes & Noble has been chosen to run Hawaii Pacific University?s bookstores in Downtown Honolulu and at its Hawaii Loa campus in Windward Oahu, the state?s largest private university said Tuesday.

Barnes & Noble College, which operates bookstores at more than 650 colleges and universities across the nation, will make the transition starting in August before moving the Downtown campus bookstore to Aloha Tower Marketplace in the upcoming 2013-14 school year. HPU is preparing to open up student dorms and offices, as well as retail and restaurant operations at Aloha Tower Marketplace.

Barnes & Noble College also is preparing to take over bookstore operations that serve HPU?s military campus programs.

?We are pleased to have selected Barnes & Noble College and are particularly excited about what this will mean for our Aloha Tower project,? HPU President Geoffrey Bannister said in a statement. ?Its vast experience with other universities, including those in urban settings, will allow us to serve more effectively our campuses and the downtown community more broadly.?

HPU said it selected Barnes & Noble through a competitive bid process that attracted other well-known retailers.

?The national bookseller was chosen for what it might provide for students and faculty, as well as local customers and island visitors,? the school said in a statement. ?While Barnes & Noble College operates more than 700 campus stores nationwide, this will be its first higher education bookstore in Hawaii.?

At Aloha Tower, it will be located on the first floor, in a 7,200-square-foot space previously occupied by Pipe Dreams Surf Co.
