On the eve of the celebration of World No Tobacco Day, 2012, a new survey has been released by Source Wire News, based on research from a major electronic cigarette manufacturer. Although the accuracy and methodology has been questioned by some critics within the medical profession, the results are never the less quite startling. There are an estimated 10 million tobacco smokers in the UK. Currently 250,000 people are believed to have quit tobacco and switched to the safer smokeless cigarette. If the growth in the number of these tobacco smokers who make the switch continues at its current rate, then according to the survey, the UK can expect the number of electronic cigarette users to rise to 5 million by 2017.

It?s impossible to determine just how accurate these findings and predictions may be, but what can?t be disputed is that there has been a substantial growth in the number of smokers who are looking for safer and cheaper alternatives to tobacco. Over the last year this interest has intensified to such an extent that major supermarkets are now stocking smokeless cigarettes even though they have not been officially medically licensed or endorsed. The medical profession and the government have by and large though expressed their tacit support for the product as it is known to do less harm than cigarettes. So, all in all, the survey?s estimated figures may yet prove to be too conservative. There may in fact be considerably more people switching to smokeless cigarettes by 2017 than predicted.??
What is slightly more surprising is that it wasn?t health or financial concerns that proved to be the top reasons for those who had already made the switch to electronic cigarettes. What eventually drove tobacco smokers to change their habits were the side effects of smoking tobacco; that is, smelly odours and bad breath. Health concerns and cost, in fact, only ranked third and fourth in the list of priorities. The combustion of tobacco does produce strong odours which quickly go stale, and linger and cling to smokers and their clothing. The ex-smokers who now used electronic cigarettes noted that this was no longer a problem, and that they certainly had no regrets about switching to smokeless cigarettes.?
