In both waves of play in the first round of the Wyndham Championship, one player stood out above their half of the draw to take a share of the lead through day one at Sedgefield CC. For the morning crew, it was Jeff Quinney. In the afternoon, it was Tommy Gainey. Both shot 7-under 63 to take a joint 1-shot lead over Stuart Appleby.
Quinney is playing this year on the PGA Tour with conditional status by virtue of his money list finish in 2010 and is making just his 11th start of the season. Never a winner on the PGA Tour and needing to match his career best finish of runner-up to get into the first leg of the FedExCup playoffs next week, Quinney says he is going for broke.
Meanwhile, Gainey has enjoyed a breakout season with three top-5 finishes and a couple of looks at a win on the PGA Tour. He?s playing in the state of his collegiate alma mater, Central Carolina Technical College, and looking to secure a better place in the points reset for the playoffs.
Appleby is in between Quinney and Gainey. His results this year have been abysmal, making the cut in two of his last 13 starts. One was a no-cut event. He has status thanks to his Greenbrier win, but desperately needs a good finish to get his season back on track and feel like the switch he made to a long putter this week was a wise one.
Englishman Paul Casey is a part of a group of ten players on 5-under. Casey has been battling toe issues for much of the year and needed a start just to keep his card. With his positioning outside of the top-125 heading into the week, Casey is playing for a chance to continue playing into September.
Joining Casey on that round of 65 are FedExCup laggards Ernie Els, Jason Bohn and Lee Janzen, as well as former FedExCup champions Vijay Singh and Jim Furyk.
Carl Pettersson, who won this event in 2008, is also in the group on 65.?Defending champion Arjun Atwal is 3-over and ten back of the joint leaders.
Jason Dufner, who fell in a playoff for the PGA Championship last weekend, rebounded well from his rough finish at Atlanta Athletic Club to 4-under 66 and get back on the saddle.
