Google looking to launch subscription music service later this year
According to sources of the Financial Times, and corroborated by The Verge's own sources, Google has been talking to music labels about licensing deals for a subscription music service to launch in the third quarter. Play Music (then Google Music) has only been around since May of 2011, and only received notoriety when several major music labels finally signed on to sell music in the Play Store. If these new deals pan out, Google could be looking to offer a montlhy paid subscription music service for users that would prefer not to purchase individual tracks, with a free tier that offered unlimited play but with advertising.
If Google was able to extend its existing licenses to a subscription streaming model, it could take the likes of Spotify and Rdio head-on, furthering the amount of compelling content available in the Play Store. Details on the deals are sparse at this point, with the launch window still up in the air. The best indication right now is the third quarter of this year, but things could certainly change.

Throw in Machida's speed advantage, faster punches, better cardio, and youth, and this one could end up being lopsided. Justices asked to void marriage law provision
WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Obama administration is asking the Supreme Court to declare unconstitutional a section of federal law that only recognizes male-female marriages.
In a filing with the court, the administration says Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act denies legally married same-sex couples many federal benefits that are available only to legally married heterosexual couples. Federal tax and Social Security survivor's benefits are among them.
In its brief, the administration said the provision "violates the fundamental constitutional guarantee of equal protection."
The brief was filed as the justices prepare to hear arguments next month in a challenge to the 1996 law.
President Barack Obama last year said he personally supports gay marriage. He said in last month's inaugural address that the law should treat gay people like anyone else.

Rumor: Windows Phone Blue could be delayed to 2014
We have reported in the past about Microsoft's plans to offer yearly commercial updates to Windows 8 starting later this year with Windows Blue. While Microsoft has yet to comment officially on those plans, the company has posted job listings that show that not only is Microsoft working on Windows Blue for PCs, but Windows Phone Blue for the various smartphones that use that OS as well.
So does that mean we can expect both Windows Blue and Windows Phone Blue to be launched around the same time this year? Maybe not. ZDNet.com columnist Mary Jo Foley, as part of the Twit.TV Windows Weekly video podcast, has heard via unnamed sources that the Windows Phone Blue team is a bit behind the Windows Blue PC team in terms of development. As a result, Foley states that Microsoft is not currently sure if Windows Phone Blue will launch in 2013 or get delayed until sometime in 2014.
Microsoft is apparently planning to make it possible for future apps for Windows 8 to work inside Windows Phone devices as well, with no need to port them. The company recently posted a job listing looking for someone to work on such a project. If the Windows Phone Blue team is behind that of the regular Windows Blue project, we might not see that kind of cross application support for a little while longer.
