Ecuador?s president considers bizarre asylum bid by WikiLeaks? Julian Assange

LONDON?Ecuador?s embassy in London said Saturday that ambassador Anna Alban was travelling to her country?s capital to brief President Rafael Correa on the bizarre request for political asylum made by Wikileaks chief Julian Assange.

Assange took refuge inside the embassy on Tuesday and remains camped out in an office there after his legal options ran out for avoiding extradition from Britain to Sweden, where he is wanted for questioning for alleged sex crimes.

Correa, Ecuador?s leftist president, has said his government is considering Assange?s request, but has not indicated when a decision will be made.

In a statement, the country?s embassy said Saturday that Alban had boarded a flight to Quito to personally brief Correa on the situation.

?While in Ecuador she will be holding a series of meetings with officials at the ministry of foreign affairs before meeting President Correa to personally brief him on Mr. Assange?s application for political asylum,? the statement said. ?She will also fully brief the president on her recent meeting with officials of the U.K. Government.?

Speaking Thursday from inside the embassy, Assange said he had made his bid for asylum because the ?Ecuadoreans were sympathetic in relation to my struggles.? He had previously interviewed Correa, with whom he shares skepticism toward the United States.

?Ecuador presently finds itself in a unique situation and it is important that those responsible making the final decision on Mr. Assange?s application are fully briefed on all aspects of the present,? the embassy said in its statement.

Assange has been fighting since 2010 to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he is wanted for questioning over alleged sexual assaults on two women. Assange denies the claims, and says the case against him is politically motivated.

Both he and supporters insist that if he was sent to Sweden he would then likely become the target of a U.S. request to extradite him there over allegations linked to his leaking of hundreds of thousands of secret U.S. documents via the secret-spilling WikiLeaks website.

U.S. soldier, Pfc. Bradley Manning, a 24-year-old from Crescent, Oklahoma, has been charged with aiding the enemy by passing the secret files to WikiLeaks and is awaiting trial.

A Virginia grand jury is studying evidence that might link Assange to Manning, but no action has yet been taken.

?We are hoping what I am doing now will draw attention to the underlying issues,? Assange told Australian Broadcasting Corp. radio in an interview Thursday.

Correa said his country would discuss the case with Britain, Sweden and the United States before reaching a final decision.

While inside the embassy, Assange remains outside the reach of British authorities ? but police are poised to arrest him the moment he steps foot outside the building.

Police said Assange will be arrested for breaching the terms of his bail, which included an overnight curfew at a registered address.

Assange?s lawyer Jennifer Robinson said Saturday that filmmaker Michael Moore has sent Assange a message of support, urging him not to despair.

Robinson posted an email sent by Moore, among supporters who offered money to meet Assange?s 200,000 pounds ($316,000) bail, to her Twitter account.

In the message, sent Wednesday, Moore told the WikiLeaks founder it was a crime ?that you even have to seek asylum, and I stand with you through this. Do not despair.?

The Justice Department meant business when it accused Apple and five other publishers of price-rigging e-books, and are officially taking Cupertino and two publishers to court. In a hearing on Friday, Judge Denise Cote set a bench trial for June 3, 2012, putting Apple, Macmillan and Penguin Group on the defense. The government's allegations focus largely on agency pricing, which sees booksellers taking a 30 percent cut of each sale in lieu of buying the books at wholesale and setting their own prices. Apple and Macmillan have already denied the Justice Department's claims, of course -- but that wasn't on the stand, was it?

Obama on Title IX law : 'Springboard for success'

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is marking the 40th anniversary of the landmark anti-gender discrimination law known as Title IX, saying it's proved to be a "springboard for success."

The federal law is best known for promoting high school and college sports programs for women. But Obama writes in Newsweek magazine that the law has led to advances across the educational spectrum, including fields such as engineering and technology.

He says women who went to school under Title IX now "pioneer scientific breakthroughs, run thriving businesses, govern states, and, yes, coach varsity teams."

Obama also makes clear that he derives special pleasure from sports.

He notes his role as a sometime-coach of daughter Sasha's basketball team and says it's "one of those times when I just get to be 'Dad.'"

Strawberry-Rhubarb Syrup with Ricotta Pancakes | Lisa's Kitchen ...

Without any care or tending at all, rhubarb grows into enormous stalks and leaves in the corner of my backyard every year from spring right through into late summer. It must be one of the most carefree food plants that grows in this climate. Although rhubarb stems are rich in vitamin C, dietary fiber and calcium, their sour taste means that they're ordinarily stewed with sugar and used for desserts like pies and cobblers ? that is why rhubarb was once known as the "pie plant" in the United States. Their sour taste also lends a wonderful tartness to strawberries with which they're commonly combined ? strawberry-rhubarb pies can be found all over around here in Ontario in the spring and summer.

Once it is cooler, I am going to make a pie from the harvest in the backyard. Hubby and best friend Basil are chopping at the bit in anticipation. In the meantime, try this for a weekend breakfast.

This beautiful sweet and tart rhubarb and strawberry combination also makes a great syrup for using on pancakes or ice cream or in teas, milkshakes or other drinks, and the best part of making this easy syrup is that straining the stewed fruits before reducing the syrup yields a delicious compote that you may want to consider using in a pie or cobbler too. I served up this syrup and compote on my famous light and creamy ricotta pancakes with plenty of syrup left over for ice cream when the weather turns hot again this week. The compote is also excellent served with ice cream.

Tips: choose firm and smooth rhubarb stems but avoid stems that are hard and rigid or blotched. You can also use frozen rhubarb and/or strawberries to make a syrup, but you may want to reduce the water slightly.

Strawberry-Rhubarb Syrup

Recipe by Lisa Turner Published on June 22, 2012 Tart and sweet homemade strawberry-rhubarb syrup Print this recipe Ingredients: 1 pound fresh rhubarb, chopped 1 pound strawberries, halved or quartered 1 cup white sugar 3/4 cup water juice and zest from 1/2 lemon Instructions: Bring all the ingredients to a boil over medium-high heat in a medium saucepan. Reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer, stirring frequently, for 5 minutes or until the rhubarb is soft. Strain the liquid, reserving the pulped fruits for use as a compote, and return the liquid to the pan. Bring to a simmer again and continue to simmer gently, stirring occasionally, for 1/2 hour to 1 hour or until the syrup has thickened to a desired consistency. Remove from heat, pour into jars, and refrigerate for up to 1 week. Makes 1 cup of syrup and 1 cup of compote

Light and Creamy Ricotta Pancakes

Recipe by Lisa Turner First published on March 23, 2010 These light, fluffy and creamy ricotta cheese pancakes are simple to whip up Print this recipe Ingredients: 4 large eggs, separated 3/4 cup whole milk 2 tablespoons honey 1/2 teaspoon vanilla 1 1/4 cups unbleached all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder pinch of sea salt zest from 1/2 lemon 1 cup whole milk ricotta cheese Instructions: Combine egg yolks, milk, honey and vanilla in a large mixing bowl. Stir in flour, baking powder, salt and lemon zest. Cover with a clean dish cloth and set aside to rest for 15 minutes. Beat the egg whites until stiff peaks form. Gently fold into the batter, leaving a few white streaks. Gently mix in the ricotta, leaving small chunks of cheese in the batter. Heat a non-stick griddle or cast-iron skillet over medium heat. Lightly grease the pan with butter. When the pan is hot enough to makes drops of water dance and sputter before vanishing, pour in 1/3 cup of batter for each pancake. Cook for 1-2 minutes or until small bubbles appear on the edges, then flip and cook for 2 more minutes or until the batter is set and the sides are golden brown. Remove from heat and serve right away drizzled with strawberry-rhubarb syrup and with a spoonful of the compote. Makes about 16 4-inch pancakes

Novartis' Afinitor gets nod for breast cancer use by EU committee ...

Novartis ($NVS) got what it had hoped for Friday, a thumbs up from the EU's Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) for a new use for its cancer drug Afinitor. The CHMP recommended it for use in women with advanced breast cancer.

The company points out in a release that the European Commission generally follows the recommendations of the CHMP within 90 days, so the drug could be approved for that purpose by fall. The FDA is also looking at Afinitor for this use.

What is certain is that Novartis' hopes for Afinitor just got a huge boost. It has said Afinitor could bring in an additional $1 billion per year from a new use in breast cancer. But others predict even more. After a study last year showed really positive results for women with advanced breast cancer taking Afinitor, the Bank Vontobel analyst Andrew Weiss bumped his forecast for breast cancer sales to $1.8 billion from $1.5 billion. He set his peak sales at $3.5 billion. It is already marketed as a treatment for kidney and pancreatic cancer.

That study found that the drug more than doubled progression-free survival when added to standard hormonal therapy in post-menopausal women with estrogen-receptor-positive breast cancer. The drug, which targets the mTOR protein in cancer cells, also cut the risk of disease progression?57% compared with Pfizer's ($PFE) Aromasin hormone therapy alone. Most women with metastatic cancer treated with hormonal therapy develop resistance over time, and that resistance has been associated with mTOR, the very protein that Afinitor targets, Novartis has said.

The company said separately it received positive opinion from the committee for the once-daily Seebri Breezhaler to treat patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in the EU.

Natalee Holloway's mom sues Nat'l Enquirer

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.?? The mother of Natalee Holloway is suing The National Enquirer, saying the tabloid published untrue stories to profit from her daughter's 2005 disappearance in Aruba.

Beth Holloway said in the lawsuit filed Wednesday that the magazine and its publisher, American Media Inc., published "false headlines, articles and statements" for nearly seven years.

"They keep on doing it," said Lin Wood, the attorney for Beth Holloway. "We had no choice but to file this lawsuit. This is a mother who has exercised every effort to make sure her daughter is alive."

Natalee Holloway was 18 years old when she vanished during a high school graduation trip to the Caribbean island of Aruba. She was last seen leaving a bar the morning of May 30, 2005 with Joran van der Sloot, a Dutchman who was raised in Aruba.

Holloway's body was never found and the ensuing searches for her would create intense media scrutiny and worldwide attention. In January, a judge declared Holloway dead.

Wood said Beth Holloway hopes her daughter is still alive. But if Natalee Holloway is not, Wood said, the mother believes Van der Sloot is responsible for her daughter's death, saying the "evidence is overwhelming" against him.

Van der Sloot is the prime suspect in Holloway's unsolved disappearance. He faces extortion and wire fraud charges in Alabama in connection with Holloway's unsolved disappearance in Aruba exactly five years before he killed Peruvian college student Stephany Flores after meeting her in a Lima casino.

Van der Sloot pleaded guilty in January in Peru to killing the 21-year-old Flores.

The lawsuit mentions several articles, including one that claims van der Sloot had a "secret hand-drawn" map to Holloway's grave. The lawsuit also claims the magazine knew statements used in stories were false when they were published.

A call to Boca Raton, Fla.-based American Media Inc. was not immediately returned.

"Defendants purposely avoided learning the truth by, among other things, failing to attempt to interview many individuals who could confirm or deny the things stated in the headlines, articles, and statements and captured in the photographs," the lawsuit said.

The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages.
