Sony files an application for Playstation TV

sony_playstation_3d_tv-580x357

Playstation TV is this nebulous concept that has evolved dynamically in people?s imaginations over the years. Exactly what would it entail? Is it, in fact, a Playstation branded TV, or a TV that comes with a Playstation built in? Is it a Smart TV with special Playstation compatibility? Is it not a TV all, instead referring to some video and media service app that is pervasive across all platforms? The closest we ever came to a real Playstation TV was the Playstation branded 3DTV Sony released a few years ago that turned out to be a complete dud on the market.

Well, the long and short of it is, we still don?t know what the Playstation TV is. What we do know is that within Sony, the idea is still being floated and given serious consideration. Which is why Sony has filed an application to renew their Playstation TV trademark.

We still don?t know if and when Sony will ever unveil the Playstation TV (which, from the trademark application, seems to be referring to both, services and hardware), but at least we know it?s an idea that Sony is still holding on to.

GOP Weekend Speech, Kansas Rep. Jenkins Presses for Student Loan Deal

(AP) ? Congressional Republicans are pushing to overhaul the government?s student loan program, as both Democrats and the GOP blame each other for letting interest rates on the subsidized loans double last Monday.

In the weekly Republican radio address Saturday, congresswoman Lynn Jenkins of Kansas is pressing Senate Democrats to act on legislation that ties the rate to the financial markets, similar to a proposal from President Barack Obama. Senate Democrats unsuccessfully sought a two-year extension of the current 3.4 percent rate.

Jenkins tells students they deserve a more fair approach, one free of politics that allows students to take advantage of lower rates and have more peace of mind.

The White House predicts a deal will be reached before students return to school from their summer break.

Obama commemorated Independence Day when he delivered his weekly address Thursday.

Mexico Raises Alert Level for Popocatepetl Volcano

Mexican authorities raised the alert level for the Popocatepetl volcano on Saturday after an increased level of explosive activity belched ash over Mexico City and pushed international airlines to suspend flights.

Reuters

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexican authorities raised the alert level for the Popocatepetl volcano on Saturday after an increased level of explosive activity belched ash over Mexico City and pushed international airlines to suspend flights.

The alert level for the towering Popocatepetl volcano, located some 50 miles to the southeast of the capital, was raised to yellow phase three from yellow phase two, Mexico's National Center for Disaster Prevention said in a statement.

It is the third-highest warning on the center's seven-step scale.

Luis Puente, head of Mexico's civil protection office, said via his Twitter account that authorities were making sure evacuation routes for nearby communities were clear, but that flights out of Mexico City would continue.

Still, some international airlines canceled flights in recent days as a fine ash fell over the capital and surrounding towns. Mexican authorities have insisted the level of ash in the air does not pose a risk for planes.

The change in activity in the 5,450-meter (17,900-foot) volcano could provoke big explosions capable of sending incandescent fragments out over considerable distances, the center added.

Authorities had raised the alert level last May, but dropped it back down to yellow phase two in June.

Watch How Silly People's Reaction Times Are in Slow Motion

This is fantastic. Distort measured people's reaction time by making them catch a falling ruler to see how quickly (or slowly) their brains can translate what they see into what they do. Putting the video to slow motion emphasizes how silly our reaction times can be. Some of us are so slow we might not even catch the ruler!

Reaction time is a complicated thing! Most people have a delayed response of about 190 milliseconds. Using a falling ruler to test people's reaction times cleverly gives the test a form of measurement. And though you'll probably laugh and be surprised at how slow people can be, don't make too much fun of them because we're all probably just like that. [Distort]

95% Stories We Tell

All Critics (92) | Top Critics (35) | Fresh (87) | Rotten (5)

Everyone has a different story. I found myself holding my breath listening to them talk. The story twists like a thriller.

Stories We Tell is not just very moving; it is an exploration of truth and fiction that will stay with you long after repeated viewings.

Part of the movie's pleasure is how comfortable the "storytellers" are with their director; you get a sense of a complicated but tight-knit family, going along with Sarah's project because they love her.

Never sentimental, never cold and never completely sure of anything, Polley comes across as a woman caught in wonder.

After you see it, you'll be practically exploding with questions - and with awe.

For the most part, Polley's thoughts and feelings are pretty much absent, but the film makes some nice observations about memory and how it affects - yup - the stories we tell.

The movie isn't really about the Polley family: It's about memory, and loss, and forgiveness, and, through it all, hope. It'll knock you over.

What emerges is a fascinating and illuminating story, one that runs the gamut from intense joy to deep sadness and features a couple of surprising twists that take proceedings off in strange and unusual directions.

An honest and authentic documentary that powerfully explores the filmmaker's own family.

Polley's portrait of modern family life is a playfully profound discussion of narrative forms - the way in which we each construct our own reality through stories, part truth, part invention.

A decent piece of work, but too fussy for its own good.

Polley approaches every character with compassion, intent upon blessing them, and serving the audience with useful questions about how we seek the truth.

Polley is working in the tradition of Orson Welles, but her trickery can be exasperating; it also neutralises many of the emotional revelations.

With Away From Her and Take This Waltz, actress-turned-filmmaker Polley has proved herself as an unusually gifted director, but this inventive, moving documentary reveals even more artistic ambition.

What saves it is our realisation that it isn't just a documentary.

A bittersweet and compelling autobiographical family portrait.

Kane-like in its mirrored complexity, flashing in its mischievous irony, the story is a shiny maze which Polley enters knowing exactly where and what her Minotaur is - the secret of her paternal parentage - while spinning for us a thread to follow.

Polley ... smilingly tells us that a story like hers can never truly be tied down, even as she screws every last piece into place.

Polley's cine-tribute is a gripping and absorbing meditation on the unknowability of other lives.

The films greatest achievement is in how deeply mesmerising one woman's story can be, regardless of whether she's famous or not.

Honestly, it's one of the best things you'll see this year.

Polley's fearless personal journey is a huge achievement, a genuine revelation - but the less detail you know beforehand, the better. Go in cold, come out warmed.

Sarah Polley is often referred to in Canada as a 'national treasure'. She's far more than that. She's a treasure to the world - period. And so, finally, is her film.

An absorbing exercise not only in documentary excavation but in narrative construction.
