France makes mass medical aid delivery to northern Syria
PARIS (Reuters) - France made its largest medical delivery to northern Syria on Friday, including antidotes for nerve agents, as rebels prepared to fight off an assault on the city of Aleppo by forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad.
France, which has actively supported the rebels in its former colony, has not yet chosen to arm Assad's foes, but has been channeling non-lethal equipment as well as medical aid through the Union of Syrian Medical Relief Organizations, a non-governmental association based in Paris.
The foreign ministry said the 16 tonnes (1 tonne = 1.102 tons) of aid was trucked from Turkey to a hospital in northern Syria, from where it will be distributed by the association. Its contents ranged from antibiotics to anti-inflammatories and medicines for heart conditions.
"These medicines will allow the treatment of several thousand people in about 20 health centers around Syria, and particularly in the north," Foreign Ministry spokesman Philippe Lalliot said in a statement.
Syria's 27-month conflict appears to be reaching a turning point, after Assad's forces backed by Iran and Lebanese militia Hezbollah captured Qusair near the Lebanese border this month.
Assad's troops have since turned their attention to recapturing Aleppo, the Damascus suburbs and parts of the south of the country where they have been mired in a bloody stalemate with rebels for nearly a year.
A diplomatic source said much of the aid would go to the Aleppo area and would include atropine and valium, both used to as antidotes to severe nerve gas exposure.
"These medicines will be able to treat 200-300 people that have been severely intoxicated and a great deal more of those who have only been mildly affected," the source said.
Paris said on June 4 that there was no doubt the Syrian government had used nerve agent sarin against rebels.

Lavrov: Syria peace conference could be derailed
ST.PETERSBURG, Russia (AP) ? Russia's foreign minister has strongly warned that an international conference intended to negotiate peace for Syria could be derailed if the U.S. decides to push for a no-fly zone over the country.
Sergey Lavrov, speaking in an interview with The Associated Press and the Bloomberg news agency on Friday, also warned against pushing the demand for Syrian President Bashar Assad to step down, calling it unrealistic. He accused the West of sending conflicting signals to the Syrian opposition, encouraging rebels to keep fighting.
He said that supplies of weapons to the Syrian opposition promised by Washington and under consideration by the EU would be a "very big mistake."
A time and place for the international conference on Syria hasn't been announced yet.

Canada flood could force 100,000 from home
CALGARY, Alberta (AP) ? Calgary's mayor warned Friday that the worst of the flooding is yet to come after a significant portion of his city's population spent the night pulling back to higher ground. Officials have estimated that as many as 100,000 could be out of their homes.
Entire neighborhoods all along the Bow and Elbow rivers have been cleared of inhabitants as many downtown neighborhoods were ordered evacuated in Calgary, a city of more than a million people that hosted the 1988 Winter Olympics.
Mayor Naheed Nenshi said early Friday morning he's never seen the rivers that high or that fast.
Low-lying areas along the river started to flood Thursday night and there was water filling up some underpasses. There was water in the streets of the Bowness area in the city's northwest. The city has not said to what extent any homes have been flooded.
Police urged people to stay away from downtown and not go to work. All schools ? both Catholic and public ? are closed, while Catholic schools in the communities of Chestermere, Airdrie and Cochrane were also to be shuttered.
The Calgary Zoo, located on St. George's Island, closed its gates and started taking steps "to secure and move animals to safe locations."
Contingency plans called for big cats, such as lions and tigers, to be moved into prisoner cells at the Calgary courthouse. But the city said that hadn't happened yet.
The Calgary mayor spent Thursday night and Friday morning hours touring all the affected areas.
He said it appeared that the smaller Elbow river had reached its peak. The same could not be said for the larger Bow.
The province reported that 12 communities were under states of emergency.
It had been a rainy week throughout much of Alberta, but on Thursday the Bow River Basin was battered with up to 100 millimeters (4 inches)of rain. Environment Canada's forecast calls for more rain today in the area, but in much smaller amounts.
Calgary is not alone in its weather-related woes. There were flashpoints of chaos from Banff and Canmore and Crowsnest Pass in the Rockies and south to Lethbridge.
Torrential rains and widespread flooding throughout southern Alberta have also forced the closure of the Trans-Canada Highway and isolated the mountain resort towns of Banff and Canmore. The flooding washed out roads and bridges, left at least one person missing and caused cars, couches and refrigerators to float away.
Officials in High River estimated half of the people in its town have experienced flooding in their homes. People had to be rescued from some rooftops by boat or in buckets of heavy machinery. Others swam for their lives from stranded cars.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police called in the military, which sent two helicopters and a Hercules aircraft to help rescue those stranded in areas where roads had been washed out.
Pictures from inside the mountain town of Canmore also a raging river ripping at the foundations of homes.
Bruce Burrell, director of the Calgary Emergency Management Agency, said water levels on the Bow River aren't expected to subside until Saturday afternoon.
"Depending on the extent of flooding we experience overnight, there may be areas of the city where people are not going to be able to get into until the weekend," he told a news conference.

Worst Fathers Ever? (GALLERY, POLL)
Anyone can be a father, but it takes a special person to be a bad dad.
You need a sprinkle of narcissism, a dash of bullheadedness and three scoops of a blatant disregard for the conventional rules of propriety.
After combing our extensive files, HuffPost Weird News has found a few fathers who, if the allegations and accusations are correct, will never be candidates for father of any year (unless the award is given ironically).
Take Antonius Hart, Sr., who set a good example for his son, Antonius Hart Jr. when they didn't get the chicken wings they ordered at a Memphis fast food chain.
The two drove back and waved an AK-47 rifle at the employees who forgot the order.
If there is strength in numbers, then surely Orlando Shaw is a great dad.
The Tennessee man has 22 children by 14 women and is being sued in what might be one of Nashville's most bizarre child support cases.
Still, Shaw said he loves all of his kids and considers himself a good father. It's just that he can't afford to pay child support.

Anthony Michael Hedger, 24, was arrested earlier this year by the Greenville County Sheriff?s Office and charged with unlawful neglect of a child after cops saw him walking naked with his baby boy -- also nude -- along the highway.
Hedger allegedly bit his child when deputies attempted to take the naked kid into custody.
In May, Jaron McGee, 23, was accused of steering his 9-year-old daughter in the wrong direction by giving her driving lessons.
She ended up losing control and slamming the car into a tree.
Carron Washington, 20, didn't abandon his two-year-old daughter, but that may have been a better option.
He allegedly fed her bleach because he thought it would help her congestion.
It didn't.
Police say Arthur Langley, 20, left his 1-year-old daughter home alone while he tried to break into neighbors' houses in a Philadelphia suburb.
It might have been better if Dario Napolitano had left his son alone.
He was arrested last June for allegedly kicking his 3-year-old son in the face while at Disney World.
Florida has another bad dad candidate in Elton Jerome Davis Jr., who allegedly abandoned his 18-month-old child in his home to go to work.
According to the police report, the accused left the toddler with a bowl of Cheerios and some orange juice to keep him company.
An unidentified witness later found the child playing with a dog on the side of a busy road.
