Green tea, the elixir of life | About Vitamin C

Green tea is often referred to as the elixir of life

It is surprising to learn ?the incredible health benefits provided by EGCG and other green tea antioxidants, excellent source of vitamins and minerals.

Green Tea Nutrition

Vitamins

Vitamins are essential nutrients that our body needs to survive and ?cannot be produced on its own. Vitamin deficiencies can cause a variety of disorders, so it is important to make sure you get enough.

Green tea is known for having more vitamins in higher concentrations than other foods.

Many types of oolong and black tea contain few vitamins, with Vitamin C and other vitamins mostly lost during the production process.

Also known as ascorbic acid, Vitamin C is an antioxidant that assists in the formation of collagen, helping the body build, repair and maintain blood vessels, scar tissue and cartilage.

Pirates always call each other ?scurvy??

Scurvy is actually a disease caused by severe vitamin C deficiency. It was common among old-time sailors on long sea voyages.

Green tea would have helped!

Green tea can contain 1.5 times more Vitamin C than red peppers, which have one of the highest concentration among vegetables.

Also known as riboflavin, Vitamin B2 is important for metabolizing energy and for the formation of red blood cells.

100 grams of sencha green tea contains 1.4 milligrams of Vitamin B2, more than 4 times that of parsley, spinach and Jew?s marrow, which have some of the highest concentrations among foods.

Also called niacin, vitamin B3 is necessary for turning food into energy, and helps improve cholesterol levels.

Folic acid is an important component for prenatal vitamins, and helps prevent birth defects.

In adults, folic acid is crucial for developing red blood cells. Deficiency can cause anemia.

However, if you are pregnant, please discuss drinking green tea with your doctor as there are known side effects.

Green Tea and Pregnancy ? A Fertility Aid?

Green tea contains more than 5 times the folic acid of spinach or parsley, and around the same amount as dried seaweed, which has one of the highest concentrations of any food.

My grandmother always used to say, ?Eat your carrots, they will help you see better at night?.

]]>

As it turns out, beta carotene, the nutrient that makes carrots orange, is a potent antioxidant that actually does help you see in the dark.

Beta carotene is found in particularly high quantities in matcha, which contains 5 times more than carrots!

Vitamin E is an important antioxidant that works to protect your cells, especially fat cells, from free radicals.

Sencha contains around 32 times the Vitamin E found in spinach and around 2 times that found in chili peppers.

Hardly any foods have it in higher concentration.

Although it is present in all green tea, it does not dissolve in water, so matcha powder is the only type of tea that provides Vitamin E you can actually use.

Minerals

Trace minerals are only needed in small amounts, but that does not mean you should overlook them. They are vital?for many different bodily functions.

Tea contains around 5-7% minerals, mainly potassium, calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium, as well as small quantities of manganese, zinc and copper.

This mineral is important for metabolism, healthy joints, and maintaining normal blood sugar.

Green tea is one of the best sources of manganese around!

Important for maintaining a regular heartbeat.

Promotes a healthy smile by preventing cavities.

This mineral is necessary for life and is found in every cell in your body.

Calcium helps build strong bones.

Nutritions

Saponins are found in all teas, and result in the frothing seen in teas like matcha. Tea leaves contain around 0.1% saponins, which give it its strong bitterness and astringency.

There currently is a lot of dubious promotion of saponins as a dietary supplement.

These substances are found in traditional medicine preparations. They have anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, and anti-allergy properties and have been shown to lower blood pressure and prevent obesity and increase immunity.

GABA is also known as Gamma-aminobutyric acid. It is an amino acid produced by the human body.

Its main function is to block the firing of neurons in the brain. When you are feeling stressed, it tells the brain and other body parts to slow down. This means it is a natural relaxant.

It has been used clinically for depressed sex drive, prostate problems, and as a non-addictive tranquilizer substitute.

Tea is a natural source of GABA, but special production techniques can increase the levels of natural GABA.

The Japanese discovered that if tea is fermented in a nitrogen-rich atmosphere the levels of GABA increase 5 to 10 times.

GABA tea is currently produced in Japan and Taiwan.

Green Tea Nutrition #4:

How Many Calories?

Green tea contains almost zero calories.

In fact, some will even argue green tea contains negative calories, because it contains antioxidants and caffeine that will help you increase metabolism, burn fat and lose weight.

Green Tea Nutrition #5:

Which Type of Tea?

While oolong tea and black tea have higher levels of aromatic oils, they have less nutrients than green tea.

Vitamins and minerals are very fragile, and in black tea most of them are lost as the tea is processed.

Among of the different types of tea, green tea is the best source of vitamins and minerals.

Number of Infusions

When you brew high-quality tea, you will maximize the nutrition if you infuse multiple times.

The first steeping extracts 13-15% of the nutrients in tea.

The second steeping extracts another 9%-12% , the third extracts 6-8%, and so on.

Of course, you will want to stop resteeping when the tea runs out of flavor.

Can You Drink Your Vitamins?

Green tea offers two advantages over vitamin supplements.

First, nutrients from whole foods are easier to absorb into your body than nutrients from pills.

Second, green tea contains much more than just vitamins. It also has lots of antioxidants like EGCG.

Of course, if you are taking supplements because your doctor prescribes them , you should continue doing so.

Pour yourself a delicious cup of a tea, and drink your vitamins!

Palestinian leader asks UN for statehood

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas asked the United Nations on Friday to recognize a state for his people, but Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said only direct negotiations could deliver peace.

Abbas handed U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon a letter requesting full U.N. membership, which the Security Council will discuss on Monday. The United States has vowed to use its veto if it comes to a vote.

"I do not believe that anyone with a shred of conscience can reject our application for a full membership in the United Nations and our admission as an independent state," Abbas told the U.N. General Assembly, which gave him a standing ovation.

Trying to head off a clash in the Security Council, a quartet of Middle East mediators urged a return to peace talks within four weeks, "substantial progress" within six months and an agreement to be struck within a year.

The Quartet ? the United States, Russia, the European Union and the United Nations ? asked Israel and the Palestinians to submit proposals on territory and security within three months.

"The Quartet proposal represents the firm conviction of the international community that a just and lasting peace can only come through negotiations," U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said, urging both sides to seize the chance to talk.

Video: Palestinians rally in support of statehood (on this page)

But previous proposed timetables for negotiations, such as a one-year deadline set by former President George W. Bush in 2007 and one by President Barack Obama a year ago, have run into the sand.

Abbas' statehood ploy exposes waning U.S. influence in a region shaken by Arab revolts and shifting alliances that have pushed Israel, still militarily strong, deeper into isolation.

In their speeches, Abbas and Netanyahu both said they extended their hands to the other party, but each blamed their opponents for the failure of past peace efforts.

"We cannot achieve peace through U.N. resolutions," Netanyahu said, demanding that the Palestinians recognize Israel as the Jewish state, something they reject because they say that would prejudice the rights of Palestinian refugees.

Netanyahu offered to meet Abbas immediately in New York, minutes after Abbas said settlement activity must cease first.

Loss of faith
Abbas' statehood request reflects a loss of faith after 20 years of failed peace talks sponsored by the United States, Israel's main ally, and alarm at relentless Israeli settlement expansion in occupied land Palestinians want for a state.

"This (settlement) policy will destroy the chances of achieving a two-state solution and ... threatens to undermine the structure of the Palestinian National Authority and even end its existence," Abbas declared.

It was the first time he has spoken so starkly of the PA's possible demise, highlighting problems faced by a body set up as a state-in-waiting but now seen by its critics as little more than a big municipality, managing the civilian affairs of the main Palestinian cities under Israeli occupation.

Dissolution of the PA would throw responsibility for ruling all of the West Bank back to Israel as the occupying power.

Israeli and U.S. politicians have threatened aid cuts that could cripple the PA, the source of 150,000 jobs.

Story: Palestinian bid upstages Arab Spring at UN

Israeli delegates stayed in the hall during Abbas' speech, which was punctuated by applause, especially when he recalled his predecessor Yasser Arafat's 1974 admonition to the United Nations: "Do not let the olive branch fall from my hand."

In the West Bank, flags and portraits of Abbas and Arafat, draped buildings in a Ramallah square where Palestinians watched a live broadcast of Abbas' speech.

"We have come to take part with our people in asking for our rights," said Mohammed Hamidat, 40. "With the current closed horizons, it's the only thing we can do, even if the result is failure. It's been years since we have seen anything new: this is a first step."

Israeli settler Meir Bartler, 25, said: "We don't care what they're up to at the U.N. We have the bible, which says the land of Israel belongs to the Jewish people."

Data: Israeli-Palestinian conflict (on this page)

A gulf of mistrust separates Israelis and Palestinians, who each feel their existence is at stake in a bitter struggle over borders, security, refugees and Jerusalem.

Political rifts among Palestinians, and the constraints of U.S. domestic politics, where support for Israel is strong, further complicate efforts to bridge the gaps.

Abbas spokesman Nabil Abu Rdaineh said the Quartet proposal would be discussed in Ramallah but indicated there could be no compromise on the core issues.

"Any suggestion, to succeed, must contain freeze of settlements and the 1967 borders. Our first choice now is to follow up on the application to the Security Council."

Burden of history
The divisions are rooted in a heavy burden of history, painfully contested narratives and recurring bloodshed.

The United Nations partitioned Palestine in 1947, but Arab states rejected that and declared war on the new state of Israel, which then captured more territory than it had been allotted under the U.N. plan and dispossessed hundreds of thousands of Palestinians, who became refugees.

Two decades after Israel seized the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip in the 1967 Middle East war, the Palestine Liberation Organization recognized Israel and reduced its demands to a state on those territories.

Story: Abbas stands to gain from statehood gambit at UN

In 1993, PLO leader Arafat and Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin shook hands at the White House on a plan for Palestinian self-rule, which was never fully implemented.

Israel has continued to expand settlements in the West Bank, although it dismantled them in the Gaza Strip, now ruled by Hamas Islamists who refuse to recognize the Jewish state.

Abbas accepts that negotiations are still necessary, but argues statehood will put Palestinians on a more equal footing. Israel sees the U.N. bid as a sinister attempt to destroy its own legitimacy.

Hamas rejected Abbas' move as "begging" for statehood. "States are not built upon U.N. resolutions. States liberate their land and establish their entities," said Ismail Haniyeh, who heads the Hamas administration in Gaza.

Onset Asthma | Care Your Health, Love Your Health

Onset Asthma

Onset asthma is whereby one develops asthma after birth. This is usually because of the surrounding conditions. Causes of onset asthma include smoking, air pollution, allergies, eczema etc. These can be developed later in life even if one did not have them during infancy or childhood. This condition affects both young and old alike.

Onset asthma can therefore be prevented.? In the case of smoking, it is clearly advised that smoking is harmful to one?s health and one of the reparcations is asthma. Air pollution can also be avoided by keeping one?s surroundings clean, fresh and healthy.? If the work place is usually polluted, it is usually advisable for one to wear protective gear at all times.

Symptoms that are seen in an onset asthma are; coughing, wheezing, tight chest and shortness of breath.? These symptoms are usually triggered by some conditions that one could be reacting to. This may be fungi, mold, emotions, sex, hormones, house dust mite, allergies etc. If these triggers are avoided, it becomes easier to control one?s condition.? Keeping one?s condition under control enables it not to get worse.

Onset asthma doesn?t have a permanent cure and therefore the mode of treatment given is for control. These are steroid tablets, syrups, inhalers and machines.? Personal treatment is risky therefore, one should see a doctor and should not buy drugs over the counter (OTC). Proper treatment and control for this will definitely lead to a normal healthy life, one need not change their life style at all.

4 Mistakes To Avoid Making Prior To ... - Home Finance Assistance

#1 ? Assuming New Debt

When you apply for a mortgage loan, the lender makes a decision regarding whether to offer funding based, in large part, on your financial circumstances. They use formulas to determine how likely it is that you will default on your mortgage payments.

One of the numbers they use is your debt-to-income (DTI) ratio. This is a ratio that reflects the percentage of your monthly income that is used to make debt-related payments. Technically, this is referred to as your ?back-end? ratio. Your ?front-end? ratio includes debt, property taxes, homeowners insurance premiums, and other outflows. The mortgage lender is interested in your DTI ratio ? they usually use the ?back-end? number ? because it informs them about your ability to afford the mortgage payments.

For example, suppose you have very little outstanding debt. Your lender agrees to extend funding for the home you?re planning to buy. During escrow, however, you purchase a new car, adding a car payment to your financial picture. In this case, your lender may withdraw the loan, thereby derailing the transaction before it closes.

Don?t assume new debt during escrow. If you must buy items, do so with cash.

#2 ? Opening New Credit Accounts

When you open new credit accounts, two things occur. First, each of the lenders (i.e. credit card companies, department stores, etc.) will conduct a ?hard inquiry? on your credit history. Multiple hard inquiries can cause your FICO score to decline, which may prompt your mortgage lender to pull the home loan.

The second outcome is that your mortgage lender will recognize that you now have more borrowing capacity. For example, suppose you open a new credit card account with a $10,000 limit. If you ?max out? the limit, your monthly payments will be between 2% and 4% ($200 and $400, respectively). This may affect your ability to pay the mortgage. Depending on the circumstances, some lenders may decide to withdraw funding for the home.

Don?t open new credit accounts when buying a home. Wait until escrow closes before doing so.

#3 ? Shifting Money From One Place To Another

When you buy a home, your mortgage lender will want to know the source of the money you intend to use to make the down payment. They also want to make sure the funds are stable, partly to minimize their exposure to fraud. It matters little whether the money is inside your checking account, investment accounts, a CD, or a 401K.

The lender will ask you to provide a few consecutive months of statements. This allows them to verify that the funds have remained in one place for an extended period. If you have shifted large sums into and out of the accounts, your lender may request receipts and other paperwork. Be prepared to provide them. If you are unable to do so, the mortgage loan may be withdrawn.

Avoid moving funds around during escrow. Doing so raises red flags with lenders.

#4 ? Failing To Seek The Help Of A Real Estate Agent

A lot of homebuyers purchase properties without the help of an agent. In most cases, they do so to avoid paying commissions. This is usually a mistake. Not only can a real estate agent offer price guidance, market insight, and help with negotiating with the seller, but she can also guide the buyer through escrow.

Work with a real estate agent. Leverage her experience and insight, especially during escrow.

The homebuying process has numerous pitfalls. Each one can potentially derail the purchase transaction. Avoid the four mistakes above to make the experience as problem-free as possible.

Poll woes don't slow Obama's campaign money train (Reuters)

CHICAGO/WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? President Barack Obama is raising millions of dollars for his re-election campaign, keeping the support of big and small donors despite the sputtering economy and slumping opinion poll numbers.

Amid high unemployment and fears of a second recession, Obama has faced withering criticism from within his own party for seeming to give in too easily to Republicans in Congress and not taking a firmer stand on issues such as protecting the environment.

His approval ratings have been hovering at about 43 percent and polls show he would face a tough fight to defeat Texas Governor Rick Perry or former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, the two top contenders for the Republican presidential nomination to oppose Obama in November 2012.

His campaign has indicated that fund-raising slipped in the June-September quarter. And there has been discontent among some 2008 donors, with some Wall Street cash shifting to Romney, co-founder of buyout firm Bain Capital, a sign of business unease with Obama's tenure.

But if Obama lacks the rock-star status he had four years ago, his events are still selling out and his fund-raising machine is outstripping 2008. Donors said the Obama camp is worried about the country's finances, not the campaign's.

"I haven't heard anyone outwardly worried. It seems like they are on track to hit their goals," said a top fund-raiser close to the campaign, requesting anonymity to speak freely.

"Put it this way: it is not money that they are worried about. They would trade all the money for better economic data," he said.

The Democratic president still attracts the army of low-dollar givers who helped push him to the White House in 2008, and the loyalty of enough big contributors that analysts anticipate he will amass a $1 billion campaign warchest.

"Some of these people may still be disappointed, but they're not going to be ready to write Barack Obama off," said Stuart Rothenberg, an independent political analyst in Washington.

Obama, the first black U.S. president, is a historic figure whose personal popularity outstrips his approval ratings. Known as a strong campaigner, he offers as president constant media attention and an access to power that appeals to big donors, many of whom are concerned that the Republican field is tacking too far toward the right.

'CLASS WARFARE'

"We've heard a lot of concern about the right wing Republican agenda, what many people refer to as 'taking the country backwards' or 'in the wrong direction,'" said Andrew Spahn, a Los Angeles based consultant who is advising DreamWorks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg as he raises money for Obama's re-election campaign.

Katzenberg, who hosted two sold out, big-dollar fundraisers in the spring, has committed to pumping $500,000 for the Obama campaign, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

Obama appealed to his base strongly on Monday by laying out a $3.6 trillion plan to cut U.S. budget deficits partly by raising taxes on the rich, which Republicans rejected as "class warfare" and a political stunt.

Some major Democratic supporters, including big labor unions, have responded positively to the plan. Opinion polls also show voter misgivings about Washington's handling of the economy extend to Republicans in Congress, as well as Obama.

"In the end, every American is frustrated with the economy and the way governance works, but that all doesn't fall on the president's shoulders," said Howard Bragman, a Hollywood publicist and longtime Democratic activist.

"His base hasn't left him and they're the ones who are the organizational spine of this campaign," he said.

Obama raised up to $2.8 million at fundraisers in Washington on Thursday and millions more on Monday in New York, where he warned donors of a "very perilous path" if his debt reduction plan is not passed. More fundraisers are on tap in New York and California in the coming days.

Member of his team stress that Obama's campaign had more than 520,000 individual donors in the second quarter of 2011, more than it had for all of 2007, and of those 260,000 had never given before.

Obama's fundraising far outstripped any of his Republican rivals in the second quarter of 2011, as he and the Democratic National Committee raked in $86 million. Romney, who led all Republicans, raised $18 million.

Campaigns do not have to release their third-quarter fundraising totals until October 15, but Obama's set a goal on September 9 of raising $55 million between June and September, to benefit the re-election efforts and the Democratic National Committee.

Presidential fundraising typically wanes in the summer the year before the election, and it was hit more this year because Obama canceled a series of events in July during protracted debt negotiations with Republicans in Congress.
