Ford on track to beat Toyota with best-selling car

Rayong, Thailand ? Ford Motor Co. says its Focus small car is on track to become the best-selling car in the world this year, trumping the Toyota Corolla.

Ford sold 489,616 Focus sedans and hatchbacks worldwide in the first half of 2012. That was almost 27,000 more than the perennial best-seller, the Toyota Corolla.

Ford made the announcement at its assembly plant in Rayong, which opened in May to build the Focus. The Thailand plant, which is one of Ford?s most advanced, has the capacity to produce 150,000 cars per year for sale in Thailand, Vietnam, Australia and other countries in the region.

Ford?s recently revamped Focus is sold in more than 100 countries worldwide. It?s a strong seller in the U.S., where Focus sales were up 31 percent in the first half of the year compared with 2011. But the Corolla is still king in the U.S., where it outsold the Focus by nearly 27,500 in the first half of the year.

The Corolla could still top the Focus worldwide, too. Last year at this time the Focus was ahead of the Corolla, but the Corolla pulled through in the end, outselling the Focus by around 100,000 vehicles, according to IHS Global Insight, an industry consulting firm.

At the plant Friday, Ford executives were also celebrating the production of the 350 millionth vehicle Ford has made since its founding 109 years ago.

So how did?Jackson?Hole, Wyo., come to wield such outsize importance in global economic affairs?

In a word, trout.

For four years starting in 1978, the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City hosted an annual conference at different sites and different times of year. The event drew little attention outside the insular world of economic analysts.

Inspired by a conference the Boston Fed held near a picturesque New Hampshire site where the tearjerker "On Golden Pond" was filmed, the Kansas City Fed held its 1981 conference in scenic Vail, Colo.

Still no luck. The Vail meeting drew the conference's smallest crowd ever.

Officials at the bank pondered how to draw bigger names and more attention to the yearly confab. That's when they set their sights on Paul Volcker, then chairman of the Federal Reserve in Washington.

They decided to pursue Volcker by dangling the prospect of one of his favorite pastimes: fly-fishing. They needed to find a sure-fire trout-catching spot somewhere in the Kansas City Fed district, which covers Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Wyoming, as well as northern New Mexico and western Missouri.

They considered somewhere in Colorado. But a fly-fishing expert said Colorado's waters were too warm for trout in August. Go farther north, he said. Go to?Jackson?Hole.

"I'd never heard of it," confessed Tom Davis, then the Kansas City Fed's research director and point man on the project, according to the bank's official history of the event.

The shift was made. And what's been known since 1982 as the?Jackson?Hole?Economic Symposium took its place in economic lore.

Jackson?Hole?isn't even a town. It's a valley. The biggest town,?Jackson?(population 9,710), lies at the southern end of?Jackson?Hole. Arches made of elk antlers mark the entrance to the town square. The Fed conference itself occurs farther north, in a lodge in Grand Teton National Park, about 50 miles south of Yellowstone National Park.

The event now draws 140 people every year, including some of the biggest names in economic and finance. They come to enjoy breathtaking views of the Grand Teton mountain range and?Jackson?Lake, to hike and fish and to engage in intellectual combat in the halls of the?Jackson?Lake Lodge.

One annual tradition is the Friday night barbecue. There, some of the world's most high-powered economists don cowboy hats, string ties and other Western gear and sometimes join in a line dance.

At each year's?Jackson?Hole?conference, the Fed chairman is a focal point. The head of the European Central Bank normally is, too. (This year is an exception. The current ECB chief, Mario Draghi, who is fighting Europe's debt crisis, canceled plans to attend.)

In the final days of the Soviet Union in 1990, central bankers and economists from the former Eastern bloc came to?Jackson?Hole?to learn how to manage post-Communist economies.

Not everything went well. The Soviet delegation had mistakenly checked the weather for steamy?Jackson, Miss. The Soviet officials "almost froze" in?Jackson?Hole's?brisk mountain air, recalled Roger Guffey, then Kansas City Fed president, according to the bank's history.

The proceedings can become contentious. At the first?Jackson?Hole?conference, in fact, Volcker himself came under fire for his drive to shrink inflation by pushing up interest rates into double digits and allowing the U.S. economy to sink deep into recession.

A University of Chicago economist named Raghuram Rajan ruined the mood in 2005 at what was shaping up as a fawning farewell to the outgoing Fed chairman, Alan Greenspan. Rajan warned that the financial system had absorbed dangerous risks under Greenspan's watch.

Participants turned against Rajan. Former Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers assailed him, calling his premise "misguided." Three years later, the world learned to its horror, as a meltdown of subprime mortgages started causing big banks to topple, that Rajan had been correct after all.

Investors started focusing especially intensely on?Jackson?Hole?after Bernanke used his remarks there in 2010 to lay out the Fed's policy options. Among the options he mentioned was a second round of bond purchases, to pump cash into the financial system and juice the U.S. economy.

The speech ? and growing evidence that the economy needed help ? ignited a 28-percent stock market rally over the next eight months. (The Fed actually began the purchases ? a policy known as quantitative easing, or QE2 ? in November 2010.)

On Friday morning, attention will again be riveted on Bernanke's annual speech. Never mind that most analysts don't expect him to offer significant new guidance about what the Fed might do next. Many think Bernanke wants more time to survey the economic landscape.

For one thing, the speech comes just a week before Bernanke will get to review the government's report on August unemployment and two weeks before he'll meet with the rest of the Fed's policy committee.

His speech might not please some investors who continue to hold out hope that Bernanke will signal that further help from the Fed is on the way.

Jackson?Hole?is used to hype, though. Even before it became where the Fed spent its late summers, it inspired tall tales. In 1895, a front-page report in The New York Times wrongly reported that the community's entire population had been wiped out in an American Indian attack.

Later came reports of a 10-foot eagle ?dubbed "Big Teton" ? that carried off two antelopes in its talons.

Alas, the bird has not been spotted since.

Bruce Buffer explains ?It?s fight time?

During recent UFC events, you may have noticed UFC Octagon announcer Bruce Buffer changing up his signature call of, "It's tiiiiiiiiiime" to "It's fight tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiime."

I was confused by this. Why would Buffer mess with such announcing perfection? "It's time" is so well known that fans usually yell the phrase along with him. It's become as well known as his brother Michael Buffer's familiar "Let's get ready to rumble," which the other Buff rattles off at boxing events.

So what's the deal, Buff?

"I was trying some new things. I'm going through some marketing aspects, and that's all I can say right now. I wanted to try it for marketing purposes, but it's time is mine. We all know that. That's basically where it's at."

Buff, if you want to cover your fancy suits in logos, go for it. If you want to rename your signature move the Mickey's Malt Liquor 180, do it. Get that paper. But please please please don't change "It's Time."

On Monday (August 27), communications throughout the Tri-County region were compromised when around noon a fiber line was cut affecting AT&T phone and Internet service in Alpine, Marfa, Van Horn, Fort Stockton, Presidio, Terlingua, Fort Davis, Marathon, and other cities. The line was cut some 30 miles from Odessa by a third-party operator, but it affected all the communities that connect to the AT&T network via Monahans.

The effects in the Tri-County were immediate. Emergency officials in Marfa came to the radio station to let people know that 911 was not operational. If locals had an emergency, they were asked to go to the EMS/Fire Department or to the Sheriff/Jail. Prescriptions at the local clinic couldn?t be called into the pharmacy. School officials couldn?t contact parents to deal with a sick student on the first day of school. Wire transfers could not be made at the local bank.

Service was restored during the 5 o?clock hour.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A firsthand account of the Navy SEAL raid that killed Osama bin Laden contradicts previous accounts by administration officials, raising questions as to whether the terror mastermind presented a clear threat when SEALs first fired upon him.

Bin Laden apparently was shot in the head when he looked out of his bedroom door into the top-floor hallway of his compound as SEALs rushed up a narrow stairwell in his direction, according to former Navy SEAL Matt Bissonnette, writing under the pseudonym Mark Owen in "No Easy Day." The book is to be published next week by Penguin Group (USA)'s Dutton imprint.

Bissonnette says he was directly behind a point man going up the stairs in the pitch black hallway. Near the top, he said, he heard two shots, but the book doesn't make it clear who fired them. He wrote that the point man had seen a man peeking out of a door on the right side of the hallway.

The author writes that the man ducked back into his bedroom and the SEALs followed, only to find the man crumpled on the floor in a pool of blood with a hole visible on the right side of his head and two women wailing over his body.

Bissonnette says the point man pulled the two women out of the way and shoved them into a corner. He and the other SEALs trained their guns' laser sights on bin Laden's still-twitching body, shooting him several times until he lay motionless. Only when they wiped the blood off his face, were they certain it was bin Laden.

The SEALs later found two weapons stored by the doorway, untouched, the author said.

Administration officials briefing reporters in the days after the May 2011 raid in Pakistan said the SEALs shot bin Laden only after he ducked back into the bedroom because they assumed he might be reaching for a weapon.

National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor would not comment on the apparent contradiction late Tuesday. But he said in an email Wednesday, "As President Obama said on the night that justice was brought to Osama bin Laden, 'We give thanks for the men who carried out this operation, for they exemplify the professionalism, patriotism and unparalleled courage of those who serve our country.'"

"No Easy Day" was due out Sept. 11, but Dutton announced the book would be available a week early, Sept. 4, because of a surge of orders due to advance publicity that drove the book to the top of the Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble.com best-seller lists.

The Associated Press purchased a copy of the book Tuesday.

The account is sure to renew questions about whether the raid was intended to capture or simply to kill bin Laden. Bissonnette writes that during a pre-raid briefing, an administration lawyer told them that they were not on an assassination mission. According to Bissonnette, the lawyer said that if bin Laden was "naked with his hands up," they should not engage him. If bin Laden did not pose a threat, they should detain him.

A former deputy judge advocate general for the Air Force said the shooting was understandable according to the orders the SEALS had.

"It wasn't unreasonable for the SEALs to shoot the individual who stuck his head out," said the former JAG, ret. Maj. Gen. Charlie Dunlap, who now teaches at Duke University law school.

"In a confined space like that where it is clear that there are hostiles, the SEALs need to take reasonable steps to ensure their safety and accomplish the mission," Dunlap said.

Dunlap adds that shooting bin Laden's fallen form was also reasonable in his legal opinion, to keep the terrorist from possibly blowing himself up or getting a weapon and shooting at the SEALs.

In another possibly uncomfortable revelation for U.S. officials who say bin Laden's body was treated with dignity before being given a full Muslim burial at sea, the author reveals that in the cramped helicopter flight out of the compound, one of the SEALs was sitting on bin Laden's chest as the body lay at the author's feet in the middle of the cabin, for the short flight to a refueling stop inside Pakistan where a third helicopter was waiting.

This is common practice, as U.S. troops sometimes must sit on their own war dead in packed helicopters. Space was cramped because one of the helicopters had crashed in the initial assault, leaving little space for the roughly two dozen commandos in the two aircraft that remained. When the commandos reached the third aircraft, bin Laden's body was moved to it.

Bissonnette writes that none of the SEALs were fans of President Barack Obama and knew that his administration would take credit for ordering the raid. One of the SEALs said after the mission that they had just gotten Obama re-elected by carrying out the raid.

But he says they respected him as commander in chief and for giving the operation the go-ahead.

Bissonnette writes less flatteringly of meeting Vice President Joe Biden along with Obama at the headquarters of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment after the raid. He says Biden told "lame jokes" no one understood, reminding him of "someone's drunken uncle at Christmas dinner."

Beyond such embarrassing observations, U.S. officials fear the book may include classified information, as it did not undergo the formal review required by the Pentagon for works published by former or current Defense Department employees.

Officials from the Pentagon and the CIA, which commanded the mission, are examining the manuscript for possible disclosure of classified information and could take legal action against the author.

In a statement provided to the AP, the author says he did "not disclose confidential or sensitive information that would compromise national security in any way."

Bissonnette's real name was first revealed by Fox News and confirmed to the AP.

Jihadists on al-Qaida websites have posted purported photos of the author, calling for his murder.

Field work in Antarctica is not for the faint of heart; the 12-day period of their work using the yacht Pelagic as a base station occurred "in the harshest of conditions ? persistent clouds, precipitation and high winds, the latter sometimes reaching gale force and requiring a lot of patience waiting out the blows," said study researcher Ron Naveen, founder of the nonprofit science and conservation organization Oceanites, Inc. "But, in the end, we achieved the first-ever survey of all chinstraps breeding on the island." </p> <p>The team estimated 79,849 breeding pairs of chinstrap penguins at Deception, including 50,408 breeding pairs at Baily Head. </p> <p>"We combined our field count with an analysis of satellite image analysis showing for the first time that satellite image census estimates are indistinguishable from ground counts," Lynch told LiveScience in an email, referring to the Baily Head numbers." </p> <p>Then, by comparing the updated numbers with previous population estimates (after accounting for uncertainty), the researchers found strong evidence of a more than 50 percent decline in the abundance of chinstraps breeding at Baily Head since 1986-87. </p> <p>The study also seems to clear up, at least for the Baily Head colony, a concern that tourism may be harming the birds. </p> <p>"While there has been considerable focus in the policy and management community about the potential impact of tourism on these penguin populations, we cannot forget the overwhelming evidence that climate is responsible for the dramatic changes that we are seeing on the Peninsula," Lynch said in a statement. "If tourism is having a negative impact on these populations, it?s too small an effect to be detected against the background of climate change." </p> <p>In the 1990s, some thought the melting sea ice would favor chinstrap penguins, which, unlike Ad?lie penguins, prefer the ice-free waters. However, the sea-ice decline in the winter has reached a point where it is impacting the penguins' favorite food, krill, said Andres Barbosa of the National Museum of Natural Sciences in Madrid, who conducted the Vapour Col study. </p> <p>The new study is part of the Antarctic Site Inventory project, which has been collecting and analyzing Antarctic Peninsula-wide penguin population data since 1994. </p> <p><em>Follow LiveScience on Twitter </em><em>@livescience</em><em>. Compared to previous weeks in which we saw about 400-500 people arriving a day, we've been seeing peaks of up to 5,000 people in one day over the past two weeks," <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1346161691_0">Melissa Fleming</span>, chief spokeswoman for the <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1346161691_3">U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees</span> (<span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1346161691_1">UNHCR</span>), told a news briefing.</p> <p> A growing number of unaccompanied children without parents are also turning up in camps, the UNHCR said. Refugees from the southern <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1346161691_7">Syrian province</span> of Deraa have reported being bombed by aircraft or shelled on their journey across the border.</p> <p> "We are already looking at potentially up to 200,000 and are working with the Turkish government to make the necessary plans," another spokeswoman, Sybella Wilkes, told Reuters.</p> <p> The figure would include the more than 74,000 Syrian refugees already registered in Turkey, which is building at least five new camps in addition to the existing nine.</p> <p> In the past 24 hours, more than 3,000 Syrians crossed into Turkey, with a further 7,000 expected in coming days.</p> <p> Turkish authorities have sought assistance from UNHCR and other agencies, Fleming said.</p> <p> "But they will continue to provide access and open borders to Syrians fleeing the conflict," she said.</p> <p> Turkey's Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu on Monday called for more help from other countries with the growing refugee crisis. Last week Davutoglu suggested <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1346161691_8">the United Nations</span> may need to create a "safe zone" inside Syria.</p> <p> Fleming said that was a question for the U.N. Security which the U.N. humanitarian organizations could not address.</p> <p> Overall, 214,120 Syrians have been registered in four neighboring countries - Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon and Turkey - exceeding the UNHCR'S forecast of 185,000 for this year.</p> <p> START OF INFLUX</p> <p> The pace of Syrian refugees reaching Za'atri camp in northern Jordan has doubled, with 10,200 arriving in the past week, heralding what could be a bigger mass movement, she said.</p> <p> "We do believe this could be the start of a major, a much larger influx into Jordan," Fleming said.</p> <p> Nearly 70,000 Syrian refugees are now registered or awaiting registration in Jordan, although thousands more have not signed up for assistance, according to the UNHCR.</p> <p> "The refugees say that many thousands more are waiting to cross and violence around Deraa, which is not far across the border, is the reason," Fleming said.</p> <p> In Lebanon, 54,142 Syrians have registered or are in the process of doing so, while nearly 16,000 refugees are in Iraq, where two of three crossings are open, according to the UNHCR.</p> <p> Thousands more Syrians have fled to Jordan and Lebanon, but have not registered for now, she said.</p> <p> (Reporting by Stephanie Nebehay; However, Curiosity will likely stop short of solving the ultimate question: Has there ever been life on Mars?</p> <p> The $2.5 billion robotic explorer, the centerpiece of the Mars Science Laboratory mission, landed on the Red Planet Aug. 5 (PDT), beginning a two-year trek around Mars' <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1346083929_0">Gale Crater</span>. In determining whether Mars is or ever was habitable to life, Curiosity should give scientists a major boost toward understanding whether life has ever existed there, and where to look for it in the future.</p> <p> It's not a new inquiry, but a question that has dogged the "search for life" community for decades.</p> <p> <strong>Turning point</strong></p> <p> "In my opinion the turning point in the search for life on Mars would be if Curiosity finds organics," said <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1346083929_2">Alfonso Davila</span>, senior research scientist at the SETI Institute in Mountain View, Calif. He is a principal investigator at the Carl Sagan Center for the Search of Life in the Universe. [Photos from Curiosity's First Drive on Mars]</p> <p> Davila told SPACE.com that if or when Curiosity establishes that it has the capability to detect organics near the surface, "then the focus should turn to understanding the nature and the origin of those organics, and to establish whether they are linked to life."</p> <p> While Curiosity might provide some clues, Davila said scientists would likely need to send a new set of instruments specifically selected to find "biomarkers." A biomarker can be any kind of molecule indicating the existence, past or present, of living organisms.</p> <p> "One option would be to go back to Gale Crater, although my guess is that whatever organics might be there are very ancient and degraded, or non-biogenic ? for example, delivered by meteorites," Davila said.</p> <p> Another choice would be to send those instruments to a site where organics should be better preserved and for longer periods of time, Davila added, "such as the ground ice at higher latitudes. We know that similar ground ice on Earth preserves organics and even whole cells for millions of years."</p> <p> If Curiosity does not find organics, Davila said: "This would strongly suggest that neither the dry soils nor the ancient sediments are good places to preserve organics. We still would have the alternative of searching for them in the ground ice, and perhaps in other substrates such as surface evaporates."</p> <p> <strong>Better method</strong></p> <p> Some scientists don't doubt whether Curiosity is up for the job.</p> <p> "Curiosity has the ability to detect organic compounds," said <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1346083929_4">Carol Stoker</span>, a staff planetary scientist at NASA Ames Research Center.</p> <p> Similar instruments were also carried on previous NASA Mars landers, the Viking and Phoenix spacecraft. "These missions failed to detect organics, setting lower limits on the presence of organics at very low values," Stoker said.</p> <p> However, a recent re-analysis of the Viking results, led by Rafael Navarro-Gonz?lez of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, Mexico City, suggest that the best explanation is that the Martian soil contains a few parts per million of organics that were oxidized to carbon dioxide during Viking's first stage of the organic analysis procedure.[The Life on Mars Search: Photo Timeline]</p> <p> Curiosity's Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) Suite Investigation is using a better method, "so it may discover organics on Mars that Viking and Phoenix missed," Stoker said.</p> <p> However, that would not constitute proof of life ? modern or ancient ? because meteorites carry organics to Mars, Stoker added. "Detection of organic compounds has limited relevance to detection of modern life. Curiosity's instrumentation and the choice of landing sites for MSL were optimized for exploring ancient habitable environments, not modern ones," she said.</p> <p> Stoker said that even if there is modern life on Mars, it can grow only where liquid water is available. Therefore, since Gale Crater has no evidence of modern water or ice, life can't grow there, she noted.</p> <p> "Furthermore, Curiosity's instrumentation is geared towards characterizing rocks and minerals. Different choices of landing sites and instrumentation are needed to look for evidence of modern life," Stoker said.</p> <p> <strong>Viking redux</strong></p> <p> The prospect that the Curiosity rover might detect organics has been appraised by one former Viking experimenter who worked on the Pyrolytic Release experiment ? one of the three life-detection tests conducted on the twin lander missions in 1976.</p> <p> Jerry Hubbard, a retired professor of biology from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, carried out pre- and post-Viking simulations, leading to his forecast for Curiosity's analysis of soil organics based on Viking biology findings.</p> <p> "I predicted that Curiosity may detect simple organic compounds," Hubbard told SPACE.com. The tests support a prediction that photocatalytically synthesized organics in Mars soil will be found by Curiosity's sensitive instruments, he said.</p> <p> Perhaps the greatest surprise of the decades-ago Viking Mission, Hubbard said, was the failure of its Gas Chromatograph Mass Spectrometer to find indigenous organics in the soils tested. However, the results of the Viking Pyrolytic Release experiment and the supporting science provide a clue as to what Curiosity may well find.?</p> <p> Curiosity's "wet chemistry" capabilities, its sensitive gas chromatograph, a Quadrupole Mass Spectrometer and the rover's Chemistry and Camera (ChemCam) instrument package provide new opportunities, Hubbard said, to not only dig into the habitability of Mars issue, but also to decide whether the negative findings of the Viking GCMS could be called to question.</p> <p> <strong>Misinterpreting results</strong></p> <p> "One of the NASA 2012 strategic objectives is 'to determine if there is or ever has been life elsewhere in the universe,' so of course NASA is interested in detecting life on Mars," said <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1346083929_6">Cassie Conley</span>, NASA's planetary protection officer.</p> <p> However, the problem of life detection is a hard one, and not really tractable with <em>in-situ</em> instruments, Conley said. "That's one thing we definitely learned from Viking."</p> <p> Conley said that science works by doing follow-on experiments to answer questions raised by early results, and no mission could carry every instrument needed to make a really definitive conclusion.?</p> <p> "MSL is designed as a very capable geochemistry mission, with the objective of understanding surface conditions on Mars ? at <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1346083929_3">Gale Crater</span>. The strategy of identifying 'habitable environments' that's used on this mission is a good way to avoid misinterpreting results that will be obtained," Conley told SPACE.com.</p> <p> <strong>Complication</strong></p> <p> Returning Mars samples to Earth would allow for much more comprehensive science, Conley said. "Until this past February, we were planning a set of missions with the European Space Agency to do exactly that. Unfortunately, budgetary constraints and programmatic priorities resulted in the cancellation of plans for that set of missions."</p> <p> And there's an additional complication to locating life on the Red Planet.</p> <p> "It's easy to find life on Mars?just bring it with you! The hard part is making sure you could distinguish Mars life, if it's there," from microbes accidentally brought there aboard Earth-made spacecraft, Conley said. There were a number of steps taken on the Viking program, she said, to ensure that Earth life would not contaminate the instruments carried as "life detection" packages.</p> <p> "Ensuring the proper precautions are taken to minimize the potential for such mistakes is one of the responsibilities of my job," Conley said.</p> <p> <em>Leonard David has been reporting on the space industry for more than five decades. class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1346062385_1">Iraq</span>'s oil exports forced the closure of the link on Monday and halted loading at <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1346062385_3">Turkey</span>'s <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1346062385_5">Ceyhan</span> export terminal, security and shipping sources said on Monday.</p> <p> The cause of the fire on the Kirkuk-Ceyhan pipeline in Turkey's Sirnak province near the Iraqi border was not immediately known, but authorities suspected sabotage, security sources said.</p> <p> The fire was extinguished and workers tried to cool the pipeline, a 600-mile-long double link.</p> <p> Turkish energy officials in Ankara confirmed <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1346062385_7">oil flows</span> were still suspended and said it was not immediately clear how long repairs would take.</p> <p> An <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1346062385_6">Iraqi Oil Ministry spokesman</span> said Iraq had halted exports due to the fire, which broke out at 12:35 a.m. (2135 GMT), and that it expected Turkey to open the link's second pipe to resume exports.</p> <p> "We were informed by the <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1346062385_2">Turkish authorities</span> that a blast and then a fire ignited on the 40-inch <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1346062385_4">export pipeline</span> on the Turkish side and we had to halt the crude flow," the ministry's <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1346062385_8">Asim Jihad</span> told Reuters in Baghdad.</p> <p> "We demand that the Turkish authorities work without any delay to repair the damage quickly and to help switch the flow to the second 46-inch alternate line to ensure no more disruption to Iraq's exports to Ceyhan port," he said.</p> <p> Between five and 10 tankers waited to load at Ceyhan, shippers told Reuters.</p> <p> Storage tanks have about 500,000 barrels of oil, not enough to meet the tankers' capacity, one shipper said.</p> <p> The pipeline, which last month exported 300,000 barrels of oil a day, is frequently shut due to sabotage. It's me to blame," Xinhua news agency quoted Li as saying on Wednesday.</p> <p> "This has not been easy for the team, the coaches, or our support team, this has not been easy for anyone," Li also told state media separately.</p> <p>"I ask the fans, netizens and the people to be patient, wait until the Games are over and I will take time to give an analysis of what has happened ... right now the most important thing is to play the matches well."</p> <p>His apology contrasted comments in April at the Asia Badminton Championships where he endorsed the strategy of holding back early in competitions to save energy for later rounds.</p> <p>"This is not a question of unfairness, there are certain rules that have been set, so everyone has to play within the rules," Li said in the interview replayed Thursday by Beijing Television.</p> <p>"Of course the foreign teams want to see our players go at it with everything they have. They want us to fight like bulls, with one dying and the other injured. Then this way they don't need to compete."</p> <p>Shortly after her public apology, Yu announced on Weibo, China's Twitter-like microblog, that she planned to quit the sport.</p> <p>"This is my last time competing. Goodbye Badminton World Federation, goodbye my beloved badminton," she posted.</p> <p>"After working hard and dealing with injuries to prepare, (you) say we're disqualified and we're disqualified. You have heartlessly shattered our dreams."</p> <p>Yu's mother defended her daughter in a tearful interview with a local news outlet. "Yu Yang has always been obedient. It's the same in the team. I don't think she would have acted alone," she said.</p> <p>In South Korea some sports fans posting their opinions on the popular portal Daum.net also berated the false play but blamed China as the driving force behind the match-throwing.</p> <p> "Why Korea and Indonesia?" said Whoohaha, among several South Koreans to blame the Chinese and cast their players as victims. "It's all because of Chinese!"</p> <p>South Korea's Dong-A Ilbo newspaper also pointed the finger at the Chinese players, whom it said first began fixing the games.</p> <p>But most media and web users in South Korea expressed anger and criticised their players, Jung Kyung-Eun, Kim Ha-Na, Ha Jung-Eun and Kim Min-Jung.</p> <p>"It's a dirty act that goes against sports and the Olympics. They don't deserve to play sports. Everyone including the coaches should get a 10-year ban," posted Shin Hyun-Dong.</p> <p>Major newspaper JoongAng Ilbo said "Korean women's <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1343915917_7">badminton players</span> have disgraced the Olympic spirit and embarrassed the country".</p> <p>Indonesians shared the sense of shame over their players, Meiliana Jauhari and Polii Greysia.</p> <p>"As a fan I am very disappointed. They showed a very bad sport spirit -- it's so sad considering they are the world-class players," said businessman Anton, who like many Indonesians goes by one name.</p> <p>"They were seeking a gold medal. They did many ways to reach the target. But that was not the good way," said Hassan Toffick, an airline instructor.</p> <p>Polii apologised to fans via Twitter but also criticised the ruling. To answer the question, researchers have transplanted tumor cells from human cancers into mice, producing mixed results.</p> <p>Now, in separate attempts to settle the issue, three research groups have taken a similar approach: tagging mouse cells with fluorescent proteins to trace various cells? fates as tumors develop within the animal?s body. In each case, tumors seem to arise from a small group of cells that act like stem cells, researchers report online August 1 in <em>Nature</em> and <em>Science</em>. Cancer stem cells are thought to be able to re-create tumors the way that normal stem cells replenish tissues.</p> <p>While the studies don?t definitively demonstrate that only cancer stem cells are capable of re-creating tumors, the three papers are signposts pointing to the direction research should go, says Phil Jones, a stem cell biologist at the Hutchison/MRC Research Centre in Cambridge, England. Researchers investigating cancer stem cells need to move away from the transplant experiments and study cancer cells in their native environments, Jones says. ?</p> <p>In one study, researchers found that about 20 percent of cells in benign skin tumors called papillomas are a type of rapidly growing cell. But skin cancers called squamous cell carcinomas have a much higher proportion of these purported stem cells, Gregory Driessens of the Universit? Libre de Bruxelles in Belgium and colleagues report in <em>Nature</em>. The finding could mean that for tumors containing large numbers of cancer stem cells, it may appear as if any cell in the tumor can cause a recurrence of the cancer, Driessens says. </p> <p>While squamous cell skin cancers may be densely populated by cancer stem cells, a deadly type of brain tumor called glioblastoma multiforme relies on only a small pool of such cells to generate the tumor, researchers led by Luis Parada, a molecular geneticist at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, report in <em>Nature</em>. Parada?s team genetically engineered mice to make green fluorescent protein in all stem cells in the brain. The mice also carried three genetic mutations that cause some normal brain stem cells to develop into glioblastomas. A chemotherapy drug called temozolomide killed dividing cells in the tumor, but didn?t eliminate the cancer stem cells, which are mostly dormant but have bursts of growth. When chemotherapy stopped, the stem cells began to divide and caused the tumor to grow again.</p> <p>The finding suggests that the only way to cure this type of cancer is to kill the stem cells, Parada says.
